Pulsafeeder's NPSH Calculator v3.0

Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH) must always be considered when using diaphragm metering pumps, especially hydraulically actuated diaphragm metering pumps. Every diaphragm metering pump has an NPSH requirement that varies between pump manufacturers. The available NPSH in the process must meet or exceed the required NPSH in order to prevent the fluid from cavitating at the pump, and to prevent damage to the pump itself.

In hydraulically actuated diaphragm metering pumps, Minimum Suction Head (MSH) must also be evaluated. MSH is the pressure requirement stated by the pump manufacturer to ensure that the pump's hydraulic fluid does not cavitate. Cavitation of the hydraulic fluid will always result in poor pump performance.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

  • This program is distributed as a ZIP file. You will need a zip utility program in order to open and install the NPSH calculator. A zip utility is included in Microsoft Windows XP. For other operating systems free utilities like WinZip are available.

  • Unzip the install files to a convenient location on your hard drive.

  • Run the setup.exe program included in the unzipped files.

  • The first time that the NPSH Calculator is opened, a registration screen will appear. We do appreciate you taking the time to complete this registration form.

SUPPORT MATERIALS - TECH SHEET 304

Technical Bulletin 304, "How to Design A Trouble-Free Installation" covers the principles behind Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH) and acceleration loss associated with reciprocating diaphragm metering pumps.

Tech Sheet 304 is an invaluable resource for any engineer responsible for system design, as well as a valuable resource for troubleshooting pump and system performance.
